Op-ed: New Traffic Light Needed at the Intersection of Empire & Reads – Meeting 9/23, 8:15 AM

5

NYC is planning on installing a traffic light at the intersection of Empire Ave and Reads Lane.

There will be a meeting tomorrow morning at Empire and Reads at 8:15 AM with the Queens Dept of Transportation to hear your concerns about this and other issues.

Many of us think we need a traffic light at the corner of Dinsmore and Beach 9th St to allow traffic to safely exit Dinsmore during arrivals and dismissals at Siach Yitzchok when vans are double-parked on Beach 9th St, obstructing the view of oncoming cars.

We do NOT need a traffic light at Empire and Reads, which will back up traffic even worse than it already is.

If you agree and can attend, please make your voice heard.

  1. Not only is a traffic light not needed at Reads and Empire (it is already controlled by 3 stops signs) but it is also not needed at B9th and Dinsmore. If the stated reason for the traffic light is because of the school being there then the school should have never been approved to built in a heavily residential neighborhood.

  2. I live on Beach 9th on the same side of the Yeshiva. What the department of transportation needs to do is tell the parents who are double parking. not to block the driveways. There have already been several times where I was not able to pull out of my driveway because parents were blocking it. I had to wait 25 minutes before I was able to pull out of my driveway. This needs to be fixed. They have no right to block my driveway.

  3. I am a lifelong resident of Far Rockaway (over 50 years now B”H) and there has been a need for a traffic light at Reads & Empire from the time I was born. I recall that when I was little parents petitioned the City for one to no avail. The argument that it is not needed because the intersection is already controlled by 3 stop signs is unavailing. Unfortunately, we live in an era where people feel entitled and view the stop signs as “suggestions, not a requirement. If the City does this correctly, it will not backup traffic. By this I mean: Westbound – turning signal green light so that people can make a left onto Reads while eastbound lane has a red light.

  4. First of all, there is not enough room there to make a separate turning lane. Even if there were, that would just put more traffic on Reads. Anybody headed towards Beach 9th will not wait by the light. They will turn on Reads and cut through one of the streets, unless they are planning on making a left onto Beach 9th. Most people are not.

A traffic light will be a nightmare.

  5. To the people against the light, are you insane? Do you know how many accident I’ve seen? You know how many road rage incidence I’ve seen? It is countless amount. That intersection is way too dangerous. There need to be one
