BUSTED: Rockaway Turnpike Drag Racers Stopped by Police

6

A little after 10:00 PM on Motzei Shabbos, a dozen muscle cars gathered in the Stop & Shop parking lot on Rockaway Tpke. They planned on drag racing down Rockaway Blvd.

By 10:30 PM, Nassau County Police showed up, together with NYPD units, and dispersed the crowd. Apparently, the 3-mile stretch of road between Brookville and Guy R. Brewer is the ideal location for these types of races.

Drag Racing is illegal and dangerous. Racing can lead to arrest and participants will be summonsed to court. You may report drag racing in progress to 911 or call 311 for past incidents.

Penalties for drivers, spectators, and other participants will usually include: arrest and imprisonment for up to three months (possibly longer, depending on the circumstances), vehicle impounding and criminal fines, often in the range of up to $1,000.

A big thank you to our local law enforcement agents for acting so quickly to shut this down and to ensure safe streets in our community. See pictures and video of the dispersal below.

  1. This is what got a young couple killed a little over a year ago. Hope this puts a stop to late night the drag racing we’ve been hearing the last few weeks.
