New York City Mayor Eric Adams waved a flag to a waiting DOS bulldozer driver to hit the ignition, and set an example of a slew of illegal motorbikes by crushing into scrap metal.
Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said the NYPD continues to seize illegal bikes in the name of public safety and order.
“The use of these vehicles puts all New Yorkers at risk — other drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and also those operating the illegal bikes themselves,” Sewell said. “It is the New Yorkers who live and work in our communities — and who must endure these hazards — who are telling us loud and clear: Get these motorbikes out of our neighborhood.’ The NYPD got the message, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
Since the start of the year, the NYPD has seized nearly 2,000 illegal motorbikes and ATVs. The bikes are made for off-road use and are not street-legal, and they generate dozens of complaints from New York drivers and residents.
A Bronx resident thanked the Mayor: “the Bronx has literally become unlivable with these dirt-bikes, not allowing us to sleep. One of the many nuances that affect our ability to be productive. I have been a resident of the Bronx for over 20 years but these things got popular last 4 yrs”.
Illegal dirtbikes and ATVs endanger the lives of New Yorkers. We're not letting them go unchecked.
This year we've already taken nearly 2,000 bikes off the street and we're just getting started.
Get the message: you want to terrorize our neighborhoods?
