I am addressing the Prime Minister, the members of the government and the companies and members of the coalition: the feelings are difficult and painful. Deep concern surrounds the entire nation. Security, the economy, society – all are threatened. The eyes of all the people of Israel are on you. The eyes of the entire Jewish people are on you. The eyes of the whole world are on you.

For the sake of the unity of the people of Israel, for the sake of the responsibility, I call on you to stop the legislative process immediately.

I appeal to the heads of all Knesset factions, coalition and opposition alike, to put the citizens of the country above all else, and to act responsibly and courageously without further delay. Come to your senses now! This is not a political moment, this is a moment for leadership and responsibility.”

Hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets across Israel, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, after a dramatic decision by Prime Minster Netanyahu to fire Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

The firing came after Gallant gave a TV address calling for a halt of the process to advance judicial reform to reach more nationwide consensus. As news of Gallant’s firing broke, spontaneous demonstrations proliferated and reached large numbers.

As of 1:00 AM IST, protests are continuing late into the night. It still needs to be determined if the reform will stop. Voices from across the political spectrum, including from inside the government coalition, have called to stop the reform legislation for unity within Israel.

Hospitals, universities, and labor workers have announced they will be striking in response to Netanyahu’s firing of Defense Minister Gallant and the government’s ongoing judicial reform legislation.

According to reports, there are currently an unprecedented 700,000 people actively protesting. The IDF has raised its “alert” to the highest levels since the start of the protests due to the loss of control within the country. Highways have been completely taken over in many areas, and many fires have sprung up all throughout the country.

Only time will tell what the next steps will be for PM Netanyahu.
