Op-Ed: Nearby Hospital to 5 Towns Ranked With One of The Longest Wait Times in NYS

13

Sorry, 5 Towns, you’re in for a wait.

Or you may have known that if you or a family member have been a patient at the nearby Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital in the last couple of years.

The Oceanside-based hospital ranked terribly in a review of federal data showcasing wait times across 147 hospitals in New York.

Patients at Mount Sinai South Nassau spend a median of 276 minutes in the hospital’s emergency room between April 2021 and March 2022. That’s over 4.5 hours for those counting.

The time ranked the facility 139 in the state out of 147 hospitals for which data was available.

Patient reports to 5 Towns Central corroborate these horrific, drawn-out wait times.

While the hospital has been conducting renovations to add departments and space to the hospital, recent wait times have reportedly not been improving to the point where it’s an ideal option for many looking to be seen quickly.

Below are other hospitals in our local area, their median wait times in the ER, and their statewide rank:

Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola was not listed in the report.

That said, it’s worth noting that patients who travel a bit further out (say 10-20 minutes extra) will be seen more quickly than going to a more local hospital such as Mount Sinai South Nassau. That’s worth keeping in mind.

  1. People should stop using ER’s as a source of primary care. Hospital should have a 24 walk in clinic for non emergency treatment. Staff it with well trained Nurse Practitioners and physician Assistants. Let them determine if a patient warrants advanced treatment by a ER.

  2. Remember that MSSN is a community hospital which serves a large catchment area and was plagued with Covid patients (up until this very day!) Wait times are unfortunate but triage protocols dictate the order of patients being seen. Hopefully the hospital will make efforts to increase staffing when the new ER is completed.

  3. @steven G…”well trained nurse practitioners” hahaha you mean the 500 hours of training they get? Thats less than a pet smart groomer. PA’s way better than NP. Simply just hire more ER physicians.

  4. My friend died in south Nassau because of prolonged wait time. It’s an issue and I told my community to stay away. We should have gone to Saints Francis or NYU in Garden City.

  5. Once discharged with kidney Infection and by the grace of an excellent physician was sent back before I died. Another time, waited over over an hr for ekg for chest pain, and more. The safety of the place is absolutely abysmal, makes the waiting time seem miniscule.

  6. South Nassau ER saved my life. The kindest nurses and staff, and a most competent Dr who saw me through a week in the ICU. I am forever grateful

  7. You’re lucky if you see a dr these days anywhere. I went to south nassau for back pain, they scheduled me for surgery, i checked myself out and never needed the surgery 15 years since. My 17 yo son went there for chest and stomach pain, they scheduled him for gallbladder surgery, i checked him out went to another hospital, he had a virus clearly didnt need gallbladder out. Lastly my mom went there for tests on her heart, she was supposed to be checked out next day, she died of malpractice. It’s a sad excuse for a hospital.
