A recent NYPD briefing ahead of the High Holidays shed light on a concerning rise in antisemitic incidents, particularly following the October 7th Hamas massacre. Hate crimes in New York City have jumped by 35%, with antisemitic acts making up 83% of that increase, and 253 attacks targeting Jews in 2023 compared to 138 last year.
Data from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) echoes this alarming trend, reporting a 140% spike in antisemitic incidents across the U.S. since October 7th. The surge has impacted Jewish communities in public spaces, educational institutions, and synagogues.
ADL’s Major Findings:
- 8,873 antisemitic incidents in 2023, the highest tally since 1979.
- Post-October 7th, there were 5,204 recorded incidents.
- Jewish institutions experienced a 237% rise in threats, including bomb scares and vandalism.
- Harassment incidents increased by 184%, vandalism by 69%, and assaults by 45%, with Orthodox Jews often targeted.
In response, the ADL has called for state-level strategies to counter antisemitism, similar to the White House’s National Strategy, declaring the rise in hate a national emergency.
Don’t talk in shul is best protection from hate crimes and bad things won’t happen
