A Jewish man reported being harassed and assaulted in an unprovoked attack on the Upper East Side, which police are now investigating as a hate crime.

The incident began as Stephen Zeffren, a father of three from Teaneck, New Jersey, exited Ouri’s Market on Third Avenue near 67th Street. Zeffren recounted that a man approached him, spat in his face, and insulted him with antisemitic slurs, calling him a “dirty Jew.”

“I was just walking when he came up and spat at me,” Zeffren said in an interview with CBS News New York. Moments later, the man punched him hard in the face, leaving his ear bleeding but causing no serious injuries.

The suspect fled northbound on Third Avenue after the assault. Zeffren, who was wearing a yarmulke at the time, said he tried to avoid further confrontation, looking down to mind his own business as the attacker taunted him. Police continue to search for the suspect and have classified the incident as a hate crime.

  1. Bad reporting. This doesn’t give a date of when the incident happened. Was it this year, last year, two weeks ago, morning, evening….? For all we know this took place 3 years ago!
