Netanyahu Replaces Defense Minister Gallant Amid Wartime Restructuring

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing a breakdown in trust crucial to Israel’s security during wartime.

Reflecting on the decision, Netanyahu emphasized, “As Prime Minister, my foremost responsibility is to secure Israel and achieve definitive victory.” Initially, there was trust between him and Gallant, leading to effective collaboration. However, in recent months, Netanyahu observed deepening divisions on campaign management, as well as conflicting statements and actions from Gallant.

Despite multiple efforts to reconcile these differences, the divide grew. These issues became publicly known, even exploited by Israel’s adversaries.

Netanyahu expressed that while he values open debate in forming decisions, the publicized rift has eroded confidence among the cabinet and government members. Consequently, he has chosen to replace Gallant with Israel Katz, a seasoned leader with an extensive track record in national security as former Foreign, Finance, and Intelligence Minister.

Additionally, Netanyahu extended an invitation to Gideon Sa’ar to join the coalition as Foreign Minister. Sa’ar, known for his strong policy and security acumen, is expected to contribute to government stability, particularly under the current wartime conditions.

Netanyahu voiced his belief that these appointments will foster unity within the government and strengthen its resolve to safeguard Israel’s security and ensure success in the ongoing conflict.

After being fired by Netanyahu, an emotional Defense Minister Yoav Gallant gave a final press conference and said:

“Whoever dies among the hostages can never be returned. There isn’t and will never be atonement for abandoning the hostages. It will become a mark of Cain on the forehead of Israeli society, and on those who are leading this mistaken path.”

Gallant ended his remarks with a salute to those who fell in war and the hostages.
