New York City is preparing for its first taste of winter as a wintry mix of rain and wet snow is expected to sweep through the area tonight into Thursday, December 5. While no significant snow accumulation is forecast, the wet conditions could lead to slippery roads and sidewalks, particularly in higher elevations and on overpasses. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution.
Wind Advisory in Effect
Adding to the challenges, a Wind Advisory has been issued from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph. Residents should secure loose outdoor items and remain vigilant for potential downed tree limbs and power outages. Drivers, especially those operating high-profile vehicles, are urged to drive carefully in the gusty conditions.
DSNY’s First Winter Operations Advisory of the Season
In response to the forecast, the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has issued its first Winter Operations Advisory of the 2024-25 season, beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4, and potentially continuing until 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 5.
Though snowfall is expected to be minimal, below-freezing temperatures raise concerns about icy patches on key infrastructure like interchanges, bridges, and hairpin turns. In preparation, DSNY will deploy a limited number of salt spreaders to pre-treat these critical areas and ensure safer travel during the Thursday morning commute.
DSNY Ready for Winter
Despite this being a minor weather event, DSNY is fully equipped for the winter ahead. The Department boasts over 600 million pounds of salt, a robust winter operations team, and advanced snow-tracking technology to keep New York City’s streets, highways, and bike lanes clear.
However, it’s important to note that property owners are responsible for keeping sidewalks safe and passable during and after snow events. Residents are reminded to stay informed about winter weather updates by visiting the City’s Severe Weather website at nyc.gov/severeweather or by calling 311.
While snowfall may be light, icy conditions could still pose a hazard. Stay safe, stay informed, and be prepared as New York City ushers in the first hint of winter.
