President-elect Donald Trump has announced the nomination of Nassau County District Court Judge Joseph Nocella Jr. to serve as the next U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. This district encompasses Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island.

Judge Nocella brings a wealth of legal experience to the position. A graduate of Columbia Law School, he began his career clerking for U.S. District Judge Lawrence M. McKenna in the Southern District of New York. He then served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District from 1991 to 1995, gaining valuable prosecutorial experience. Following this, Nocella spent over a decade in private practice, further broadening his legal expertise.

In the public sector, Nocella held several key positions in Nassau County and its municipalities. He served as counsel to the Nassau County Executive and Legislature, managing attorney in the County Attorney’s office, and counsel to the Office of Housing and Community Development. His roles extended to the Town of Oyster Bay as Town Attorney and the Town of Hempstead as Town Attorney and Chief of Staff to the Town Supervisor. In 2022, Nocella was appointed as a Nassau County District Court Judge and was elected to the position that November. He began serving as a Family Court Judge on January 1, 2025.

President-elect Trump praised Nocella’s extensive legal background, stating, “Judge Nocella has a strong record of bringing law and order to the incredible people of New York.”

Local officials have expressed support for Nocella’s nomination. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman commented, “Joe Nocella is a seasoned prosecutor with great integrity and will be a valuable asset in fighting crime and protecting the homeland.”

Nocella is set to succeed Breon Peace, who announced his resignation effective January 10, 2025. Carolyn Pokorny, the current Deputy U.S. Attorney, will serve as Acting U.S. Attorney until Nocella’s confirmation.

The Eastern District of New York is a significant jurisdiction, handling a wide range of federal cases, including those related to organized crime, terrorism, and public corruption. Judge Nocella’s diverse legal experience positions him well to lead this office in pursuing justice and upholding the rule of law.
