A Miracle Amid the Ashes

Joshua and Emily Kotler, along with their two daughters, Liberty (4) and Eve (2), lost their Altadena home in a devastating fire. Though everything they owned was destroyed, they returned to the ruins in hopes of finding something to salvage.

Amazingly, the only item they recovered was Joshua’s grandmother’s menorah, a precious heirloom from a Holocaust survivor. Overcome with emotion, Joshua described the moment as “insanely powerful.”

This is not the first time a menorah has been pulled from destruction and ashes.

In late November 2024, with Chanukah approaching, an Israeli photographer captured a man lifting the mangled remains of a family menorah from the ruins of a home on a kibbutz. The menorah likely belonged to the Avigdori-Shoham-Kipnis family, who suffered unimaginable tragedy: two members of the family were murdered on 10/7, their caretaker was killed, and seven were taken hostage. Six have since been released in a hostage deal.

These stories remind us of the enduring light of hope and resilience. May the Kotler family and all those affected by these fires and tragedies find comfort, strength, and blessings in the days ahead.
