Thanksgiving: Harmless Holiday or Chukos HaGoyim?

By Rabbi Yehuda Spitz, OhrSameach.Edu

One of the interesting aspects of being American and living in the ‘Medina shel Chessed’ is dealing with secular holidays. A day off from work, more time to learn, and suspended Alternate Side parking rules are always appreciated. Of these holidays, Thanksgiving is by far the most popular among Yidden, with many keeping some semblance of observance, generally as a way of saying ‘Thank You’ and showing a form of Hakaras HaTov to our host country. Although all agree that showing Hakaras HaTov is prudent, on the other hand, it is well known that many contemporary poskim were very wary of any form of actual Thanksgiving observance. This article sets out to explore the history and halachic issues of this very American holiday.

Why Thanksgiving?..

Video: Iron Dome Missile Defense System In S'derot as israel condemns the attacks

The Israeli envoy to the UN calls on the United Nations Security Council to condemn the rocket fire from the Gaza Strip toward Israel.

“Nine million citizens are facing an insufferable terror attack by terror groups. I expect a clear and unequivocal condemnation of the side responsible for this and not a statement calling for both sides to act with restraint. The time has come for the international community to understand that silence is a prize for terror,” Ambassador Danny Danon says in a statement.

Danon adds: “Israel is not interested in an escalation but will lead the campaign against terror with determination and strength.”

BH, The Driver has been found guilty on 6 counts. Joel Kaplan shares his feelings & Recounts the story

Update as of 9/24 [7:45 PM]: At about 2:30 PM today, the jury notified the Court that they had reached a verdict.

My wife Leah and my daughter Bryna and I were in the courtroom.

It reminded me l’havdol of shul between Musaf and mincha on Yom Kippur. Quiet, a few people talking quietly, davening still, maybe dozing. Then as it gets closer to mincha, the buzz of activity begins.

There was a scurry of activity, as the attorneys, the judge, the court officers (increased to five, surrounding the defendant) and attorneys and press came into the courtroom…
