Benny Gantz Resigns from Wartime Government, Criticizes Netanyahu

Announcing his resignation from the emergency government, National Unity chairman Benny Gantz declared that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is obstructing the path to a “true victory.” Gantz emphasized that his party had joined the coalition post-October 7, despite recognizing the government’s flaws, out of a sense of duty to the country. He criticized the government’s tendency to prioritize political agendas over strategic considerations.

Gantz outlined that true victory involves the return of hostages, the removal of Hamas from power in Gaza, and the formation of a regional alliance against Iran. “Netanyahu prevents us from achieving this true victory,” Gantz stated.

In his resignation announcement, Gantz called on Netanyahu to agree on a date for elections, suggesting that it is essential to reestablish a government that can win the people’s trust and effectively address Israel’s challenges. Gantz urged, “Netanyahu, set an agreed election date. Don’t let our people be torn apart.”

While Gantz’s decision may be justified from his perspective, the timing has raised eyebrows, occurring just 24 hours after the miraculous operation that rescued four hostages from Gaza. Additionally, Hamas and other terrorist groups tend to exploit any signs of division within Israel, which undermines national unity. This move is likely to be poorly received by the Israeli public, who were experiencing a boost in morale following the successful rescue operation.

Minister-without-portfolio Benny Gantz also made an emotional appeal, asserting, “Netanyahu is preventing us from moving forward to a real victory. Therefore, today we are leaving the emergency government with a heavy heart but with our whole heart.” He accused the government of hesitating on critical strategic decisions due to political motivations.

In solidarity with Gantz, Gadi Eisenkot, former IDF Chief of Staff and current minister without portfolio, also stepped down from the War Cabinet. Opposition leader Yair Lapid supported Gantz’s decision, calling it “justified and important.”

Meanwhile, Ben Gvir’s party has resumed coalition support but is demanding more influence on war-related decisions. Israeli Finance Minister Smotrich commented that Gantz’s actions have achieved the goals of Israel’s adversaries, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran.

US Secretary of State Blinken is scheduled to meet with Gantz tomorrow. In response to the upheaval, Ben Gvir has opposed Netanyahu’s motion to dissolve the “war cabinet” and instead seeks to formally join it.

Additionally, Yechiel Tropper, a member of the Knesset for National Unity, announced his resignation from the Israeli Government.

Prime Minister Netanyahu responded with a statement: “A few hours ago, the entire State of Israel mourned and saluted the late Hero of Israel, Arnon Zamora. Israel is in an existential war on several fronts. This is not the time to abandon the campaign; this is the time to join forces. Citizens of Israel, we will continue until victory and the achievement of all the goals of the war, primarily the release of all our hostages and the elimination of Hamas. My door will remain open to any Zionist party ready to assist in bringing victory over our enemies and ensuring the safety of our citizens.”

Minister of National Security Itamar Ben G’vir: “The fact that the small cabinet has so far not had a single member from the conception challengers, is the continuation of the conception’s rule, a central part of the problem we are in, and the corruption that brought us to 7.10.

Now, in light of Gantz’s retirement, I have issued a demand to the Prime Minister demanding to join the reduced cabinet. The time has come to make brave decisions, achieve real deterrence and bring security to the residents of the south, the north, and Israel as a whole.”

  1. As usual, poor timing to resign by Ganz, Eisenkot, Rosenfeld, and Tropper. Still trying to overthrow Netanyahu during an existential war. Do they really think citizens are concerned about anything else but survival? Iran is laughing at the discourse in the government, which equals weakness. These 4 egoists haven’t learned that this is what caused October 7th in the 1st place. They are just a bunch of sore losers and will do anything to obtain power, even if it’s at the expense of our precious soldiers’ lives.
