New York City-run vaccination centers and hospitals are now offering the pediatric dose of the Pfizer vaccine to kids ages 5-11. The city has nearly a quarter-million available. The shots will also be available through 1,500 pediatricians at doctor’s offices in all five boroughs.
The pediatric dose of the Pfizer vaccine for 5 to 11-year-olds was recommended earlier this week by CDC Director Rochelle Walensky. This would make nearly all school-age children eligible. In the city, 78% of 12-17-year-olds have been vaccinated so far, which is much higher than the state average for that age group.
U.S. regulators authorized Pfizer’s vaccine for younger children after millions of 12- to 17-year-olds already safely got the shot, the only one available for children in the country. Those ages 5 to 11 will get just a third of the dose given to teens and adults.
