A gunman wearing military-style clothing and body armor opened fire with a rifle at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, killing at least 10 people before being taken into custody Saturday afternoon, law enforcement officials told The Associated Press.

Details on the number of additional people shot at the Tops Friendly Market and their conditions weren’t immediately available.

Investigators believe the gunman may have been streaming the shooting through a camera affixed to his helmet, one of the officials said. The video showed the gunman, dressed in military gear, pulling up to the front of the store with a rifle on the front seat and then pointing the rifle at people in the parking lot as he exited the vehicle and opening fire, the official said.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman sent the following message following the horrific incident:

I want to send my heartfelt condolences to the victims and families of today’s horrific and senseless shooting in Erie County, Buffalo. A simple trip to the local supermarket should never end in tragedy like we saw today.

While there is no nexus or specific threats to Nassau County, we continue to work with our federal, state and local partners as we continue our assessment. The Police Department is intensifying its patrols around all areas of mass transit, houses of worship, locations of large gathers and business locations.

Residents are reminded to call 911 immediately if they see or hear anything suspicious.

Governor Hochul: “This is my community. I know this community well, I’ve walked these streets. I know the individuals who live here. It’s a wonderful tight knit neighborhood. And to see that sense of security shattered by an individual, a white supremacist who has engaged in an act of terrorism and will be prosecuted as such…it strikes us in our very hearts to know that there is such evil that lurks out there…”

Hochul: “I’ve seen violence from guns on the Brooklyn subway, and now in the streets of Buffalo, it has to stop. It has to stop. On Tuesday in Albany, we had already planned to be announcing a comprehensive gun package to address further loopholes that exist in our laws. We are doing everything we can to ensure that our laws are tight, they’re ironclad, to ensure that our law enforcement have the resources they need.”
