Weather Update: Severe Storms & Flash Flood Risk Expected in NYC

1

New York City residents and neighboring areas should prepare for a potentially stormy day as showers and thunderstorms are forecasted to develop ahead of an approaching frontal system. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a weather advisory, highlighting the possibility of strong to severe storms, localized flash flooding, damaging wind gusts, hail, and even a low risk of isolated tornadoes.

The greatest threat of damaging wind gusts exceeding 58 mph lies across the Lower Hudson Valley, Northeastern New Jersey, the NYC metro area, western Long Island, and Southwest Connecticut. Additionally, localized hail with a diameter of around 1 inch is possible. While the risk of an isolated tornado is relatively low, areas across Northeastern New Jersey and the Lower Hudson Valley should remain alert.

Heavy rainfall is expected, which may lead to minor urban flooding and poor drainage conditions throughout the entire area. Localized flash flooding is also a concern. The timing of these severe weather conditions is mainly forecasted for this afternoon through approximately 10 pm this evening.

Governor Kathy Hochul has expressed her concerns regarding the approaching storms, urging New Yorkers to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. She stated, “Nearly every region across the State will experience thunderstorms or heavy rainfall over the coming days, putting many communities at risk of isolated flash floods.” The governor emphasized the potential for localized flooding in New York City, Long Island, Mid-Hudson, and Southern Tier. Upstate regions, including the Capital Region, North Country, Mohawk Valley, and Central New York, are also under the threat of excessive rainfall and isolated flash floods.

While there remains some uncertainty about the extent of the severe weather threat, particularly from the NYC metro area and eastward along the Hudson River corridor, residents are advised to stay informed and remain updated on the latest forecasts. The NWS and state personnel are actively monitoring the situation, and residents are encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts and be aware of any road closures.

As the day progresses, residents should stay tuned to local weather reports and heed any warnings or instructions from authorities. Taking responsible precautions and staying informed will help ensure the safety of individuals and communities throughout the duration of this weather event.
