NYC Councilwoman Calls for Reevaluation of Sanctuary City Laws Following Tragic Death

Councilwoman Vickie Paladino expressed concern over New York City’s sanctuary city laws in light of the recent death of Laken Riley by an illegal immigrant released in Queens.

Paladino stated that Laken’s death could have been prevented if the NYPD had collaborated with ICE to hold the suspect, Jose Antonio Ibarra, pending investigation and possible deportation. She criticized progressive Democrats for prioritizing sanctuary city policies over public safety, leading to dangerous repercussions not only for New Yorkers but also for residents of other states.

Paladino applauded Georgia for passing legislation requiring law enforcement to report potentially illegal immigrants to ICE and urged New York to follow suit. She emphasized ongoing efforts in the state legislature and City Council to address this issue.

“This afternoon I sat down with Eric Shawn to discuss New York City’s sanctuary city laws in light of the recent death of Laken Riley by an illegal immigrant who was released in Queens after being arrested for endangering a child. Laken’s death was completely avoidable had the NYPD been able to work with ICE to hold Jose Antonio Ibarra pending an investigation and possible deportation. Instead, due to sanctuary city laws, Ibarra was released and was given the opportunity to flee to Georgia.

Even after these events, progressive democrats are hell-bent on protecting sanctuary city laws at the expense of law-abiding New Yorkers and now, law-abiding residents of other states. New York is allowing its dangerous problems to expand to the rest of the country. Thankfully, Georgia has common sense and has already passed legislation in its House to require law enforcement to report potentially illegal immigrants to ICE. It’s time New York wakes up and does the same. The state has legislation in to do so and the City Council will soon have as well. Now all we have to do is sit back and watch as the progressive Democrat majority makes its bed; unfortunately, the rest of us will be forced to sleep in it.”
