The Village of Lawrence provided the following NCPD alert with details of how to better prevent garage break-ins.

“The garage is one area that is often overlooked, especially ones that are detached from the house. The Nassau County Police Department informed us that burglaries into detached garages have increased recently. Oftentimes they happen because we accidentally forget to lock the garage doors and windows, making the garage an easy target.”

Don’t be the next victim. Here are several simple steps that everyone should follow.

– Lock gates, windows and doors.
– Remove garage door openers from cars parked in the driveway.
– Place surveillance cameras as high as possible where they can’t be reached, and display warning stickers on doors and windows.
– Keep interior and exterior lights on.
– Install deadbolts to prevent doors from being pried open.
– Store valuables in discrete locations, away from windows and obvious places.

If You See Something, Say Something. Dial 9-1-1 and be ready to provide the police with as much information as possible.
