Celebrating The Life of Their Brother Through Music; Yehuda Becher, Murdered at Nova Festival

3

“My G-d, the soul that You have placed before me, it is pure”: these are the opening lyrics to Elokai Neshama, a song written and performed by Yehuda Becher HY”D before he was tragically killed in the October 7th attacks. His brothers, along with singer Avishai Suaa, have recorded and released their cover of Yehuda’s song in his memory.

Yehuda’s song is based around Hashem’s creation, formation, and bestowment of His perfect souls into our bodies, including lyrics such as “You have breathed it into me and You will preserve it within me. You in the future will take it from me and restore it to me in the future to come.” These are beautiful lyrics regardless, but all more haunting given Yehuda wrote this song a mere few weeks before the Hamas massacre.

His brothers’ rendition is a moving tribute to their fallen sibling, a sentiment we are all too familiar with. 1,200 people were killed. Over 150 are still being held hostage. While we may not be immediately blood-related, the Bechers are our Jewish family and their loss is felt by us all.

Yehuda’s song ends with a poignant, everpresent observation: “My G-d and G-d of my fathers, Master of all creations, Lord of all the souls.” He runs the world and we can only daven to Him that He will care for us as best He sees fit and that we are deserving of His protection.

Yehuda had an obsession with Modeh Ani and constantly thanked Hashem for all the “little things”, and had an unbelievable appreciation for life.

May Yehuda’s Neshamah, and all the Neshamos reclaimed by Hashem in the attacks, have an Aliyah.
