Weather Alert: Prepare For Heavy Rain & Strong Winds on Tuesday Evening

0

Long Island and the Rockaways dodged the worst of last weekend’s wintry weather, but prepare yourself for another round of potentially severe weather from Tuesday evening into Wednesday.

The forecast includes rainfall of more than two inches in certain areas, along with peak wind gusts of 60-75 mph. This type of weather could topple trees, bring down branches on wires and cause outages.

NWS has issued a “High Wind Warning” for Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a wind advisory for the rest of the NYC metro from 6 pm Tuesday to 6 am Wednesday. Strong winds could blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are expected, according to the National Weather Service.

This is in addition to the Flood Watch which is in effect to cover the potential for torrential rainfall and flash flooding. Have a way to get weather warnings (enable weather alerts on your phone) from Tuesday into Wednesday. We’ll have further updates this evening.

Statement from PSEG

PSEG Long Island crews are ready to respond and we have brought in more than 350 off-Island utility personnel to ensure we can restore power safely and as quickly as possible. Please use extra caution when driving near utility crews working in the field.

Reporting a power outage:

Use our Outage Tracker, exclusively in the free PSEG Long Island mobile app for iOS and Android. The tracker will help you follow power restoration progress at each step.

You can also report an outage and track progress on the MyPower Map. Visit us online for storm preparedness tips.

Before we can provide an accurate Estimated Time of Restoration (ETR) you may first see “Assessing Conditions” in a message you receive from us or on the online outage map. Crews must often assess damage before making repairs. We will provide an ETR as soon as possible and, because it is an estimate, an ETR could change.

Storm safety and preparation:

  • Electric current passes easily through water. If you encounter a pool of standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.
  • Assume any downed wire is a live electric wire and stay at least 30 feet away. Electric current passes easily through water. Never drive over downed wires. Call us anytime to report a downed wire: 1-800-490-0075.
  • Be careful near storm debris, which could be hiding downed wires.
  • Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning: Never operate a generator in an enclosed space, including an open garage, and keep it outdoors at least 20 feet away from doors, windows and vents. Never use a range or oven to heat your home.
  • Charge mobile devices ahead of the storm and unplug any electronics that are sensitive to power surges.
  • Take time now to secure loose outdoor items that strong winds could blow away.
  • Have flashlights, a portable radio and extra batteries on hand.

    Statement from Village of Cedarhurst

    Weather Advisory

According to the National Weather Service, Long Island is forecasted to experience substantial rainfall and powerful winds starting Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning.
We offer the following suggestions to help residents deal with the storm.

    • In case of an emergency call 911. Do not call the local police precinct directly. This only slows down the response time.
    • For fire emergencies, call the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department at 516-569-4411

    BEFORE THE STORM

    • Prepare batteries, a battery powered radio, flashlights, candles, and bottled water (or fill the bathtub) so that you have the basic necessities in case of a power outage.  Water stored in your bathtub should be used for flushing and washing, but NOT for drinking unless you boil it first.
    • Charge all your cell phones and keep them charged.
    • If you have a generator, check to see if it’s working and has fuel. Use only approved containers to store gasoline, and make sure that they are stored safely.  Keeping fuel indoors is dangerous because gasoline vapor can accumulate and ignite or explode. NEVER operate a generator indoors. The exhaust fumes are deadly.
    • Fill your car’s gas tank to avoid the morning-after crush at the gas station.
    • Remove all outdoor furniture, trampolines, BBQ’s, garbage cans, flags, flowerpots, and other items that can become airborne in a windstorm or hurricane. Flying objects are extremely dangerous to your home and to others.

    DURING THE STORM

    • Avoid going outside in a storm. Staying inside is the safest option.
    • Never touch or walk near downed electric wires. Call 911.  If wires fall on your car while you are inside, do not touch any part of the car. Remain calm, stay in the car, and call 911.
    • NEVER touch or go near downed WIRES. It is best to maintain a distance of at least 30 feet from a downed power line. To report a downed wire, call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number at 800-490-0075 or call 911.
    • Electric current passes easily through water. If you encounter a pool of standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.
    • If you are driving in a heavy downpour, safely pull over and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends.
    • To Report an outage and receive status updates text OUT to PSEGLI (773454). You can also report your outage through their app, or website at www.psegliny.com/outages
