Former U.S. Orthodox Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, who nearly won the vice presidency on the Democratic ticket with Al Gore in the disputed 2000 election and who almost became Republican John McCain’s running mate eight years later, has passed away.

Lieberman died in New York City on Wednesday due to complications from a fall. He was 82.

The family of Senator Joseph I. Lieberman issued the following statement today:

“Former United States Senator Joseph I. Lieberman died this afternoon, March 27, 2024, in New York City due to complications from a fall. He was 82 years old. His beloved wife, Hadassah, and members of his family were with him as he passed. Senator Lieberman’s love of God, his family, and America endured throughout his life of service in the public interest.”

Senator Lieberman’s Levaya will be held on Friday, March 29th, at Congregation Agudath Sholom in his hometown of Stamford, CT.

He was a politician and lawyer who served as a United States senator from Connecticut from 1989 to 2013.

In 2012, he wrote a book titled “The Gift of Rest: Rediscovering the Beauty of the Sabbath”. The intro to the book read as follows: “Our bodies and souls were created to rest—regularly—and when they do, we experience heightened productivity, improved health, and more meaningful relationships.

In these pages you’ll find wonderful stories of the senator’s spiritual journey, as well as special Sabbath experiences with political colleagues such as Bill Clinton, Al and Tipper Gore, John McCain, Colin Powell, George W. Bush, Bob Dole, and others. Senator Joe Lieberman shows how his observance of the Sabbath has not only enriched his personal and spiritual life but enhanced his career and enabled him to serve his country to his greatest capacity.”

He was truly an exceptional human being, a moral person that all people of faith looked up to, and a figure that the Jewish community would seek counsel and advise from for many decades.

RJC National Chairman Senator Norm Coleman said: “Joe Lieberman was a true mensch and a great American. It was a pleasure and an honor to work with him in the Senate. He built a successful political career while staying true to what he felt was right. Time and again, Senator Lieberman put principle over politics. He was a shining example of all that’s good and decent about public service. And he was a committed and proud Jew who served his country with distinction.”

David Greenfield: “When I worked for Senator Lieberman, I remember him walking 5 miles to the US Senate, in the worst weather, from his home in Georgetown on Saturdays to attend an emergency vote because he was proudly Shabbos observant.

They literally don’t make them like that anymore.

BDE”
