In May 2024, NYC DOT will begin replacing existing Pay-And-Display meters with Pay-By-Plate meters. Installation of new Pay-By-Plate meters will begin in Upper Manhattan.
Pay-By-Plate meters are touchscreen and have a larger solar panel.
Pay-By-Plate meters require motorists to enter their license plate information when paying for metered parking. After payment is complete, users are not required to display their receipt on their dashboard.
Parking zones with existing Pay-And-Display meters will still require users to display their receipt.
Always check posted signage and meters to confirm regulations and price.

No more displaying paper receipts on your dashboard for short-term parking!
Rolling out next month, NYC’s new pay-by-plate parking meters are easier to use and will save enough paper each year to stretch from NYC to LA.

This, IMO is to further prevent people “sharing tickets” If I put 2 hours on the meter, but leave after 1.5, I’d offer my paper – with 30 minutes rest to someone. The NYC parking app diminished this occurrence and this puts the final nail in the coffin!
