*The following is a letter sent to us by the Far Rockaway Civic Association

Dear Community member,

Firstly, we the committee want to thank you for your advocacy for the community, we can not do it without you.

Please find below an email which should be sent both to New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio and to Steven Banks the commissioner of New York City Department of Social Services. We ask that that you cut and paste the emails below and to cc [email protected] so that we may deliver copies to City hall at a later date.

It is crucial that all those who send the letter include their address, including their zip code. The reality is that city elected officials care about those who reside within their districts. Therefore, every concerned Nassau County resident should urge their family and friends who reside in Far Rockaway/Bayswater to send these emails.

We once again want to thank you for your advocacy, your voice will make a difference. As this campaign gets underway we will keep you informed on all the actions taken.

Honorable Mayor Bill De Blasio,

I am writing to express my opposition to the adult family shelter being proposed at 1252 Brunswick Ave in Far Rockaway, NY 11691. As it has been explained to me on Monday November 9th the New York City Department of Homeless services reached out Queens Community Board 14 and the area’s local elected officials to inform them that a 72 unit Adult Family shelter will be built at this location with a projected opening date in 2022.

As residents of the area we must do everything to ensures that affordable and decent homes are available to all. As Giselle Routhier (policy director at the Coalition for the Homeless) said “We can’t solve homelessness without addressing the affordability and stability crisis.” With this being said there are currently large developments of permanent supportive housing being built throughout community board 14 which is slated to be available before the opening date of 2022. BY utilizing these permanent houses as an alternative for this shelter through supportive housing is the best way to address the needs of all vulnerable New Yorkers.

Additionally, we ask that an environmental impact study be conducted of the site and surrounding areas. In 2012 State DEC determined the surrounding lots along Brunswick Ave for remediation as they were previously used as a Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP site) and is listed at site #241032 on the State DEC Web-site (https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/remediation_hudson_pdf/e241032rod.pdf).

I want to thank you in advance for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from your office regarding this urgent matter.

Best,
