The U.S. Embassy has issued an alert telling U.S. citizens to “avoid traveling to the airport and avoid airport gates,” following an explosion outside Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul.
The US Pentagon Press Secretary has officially confirmed that the explosion at the Kabul airport was an attack, and says there was at least one other explosion as well. He also confirmed that there were U.S. and civilian casualties, but did not specify a number.
We can confirm that the explosion at the Abbey Gate was the result of a complex attack that resulted in a number of US & civilian casualties. We can also confirm at least one other explosion at or near the Baron Hotel, a short distance from Abbey Gate. We will continue to update.
