Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman signed an executive order today which he says will shed light on the effect bail reform has had on the community.

Blakeman says it will allow residents to learn more about the potential threat these laws are to their safety.
“As I have said repeatedly, judges should have the sole discretion to determine if someone is a danger to the community or a flight risk,” says Blakeman.

Blakeman released the following statement:

REPEAL BAIL LAWS that are negatively impacting our community. The Executive Order I signed today sheds light on the impact of these dangerous laws and puts pressure on the Governor and State lawmakers to put law abiding Americans above criminals.

In 2021, Nassau County reported 11,005 total arrests; of those total arrests, 9,699 were released without bail, and over 300 people were let go for weapon related offenses without bail.

The order signed by the County Executive today directs the Nassau Police Department to disclose a daily report with pending criminal case data and bail status of those rearrested.

Blakeman had said during his inaugural address as Nassau’s top official that he’d join with new District Attorney Annie Donnelly and law enforcement officials to put pressure on Democrats who control the state Legislature to repeal the Bail Reform Act.

“Criminals have more rights than victims,” Blakeman said at a speech delivered at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. “Enough is enough.”
