Controversy Over Stop Sign Cameras in Nassau County Neighborhood

12

A recent initiative on Long Island aims to enforce stop sign violations by utilizing speed cameras. These cameras have been placed near stop signs in a Nassau County neighborhood, catching drivers off guard and resulting in fines. However, the legality of this method has sparked debate.

In the North Shore village of Saddle Rock, many drivers have been observed ignoring stop signs and driving recklessly. But approximately a year ago, the installation of several stop sign cameras led to the issuance of $60 fines for violators. Some locals have commended the cameras, stating that they have made the streets safer for pedestrians and children.

Nevertheless, the cameras’ legality has come under question. Although they have been effective in catching drivers, there is no state law that authorizes their use. Many individuals, including lawyers who have received stop sign camera tickets, are disputing the authority of the village to issue such tickets.

After consulting with state agencies, it appears that the village may not have the legal right to use stop sign cameras, as they were not approved by state lawmakers. However, Saddle Rock’s mayor did not respond to requests for comment.

Several drivers who have received stop sign camera tickets have chosen not to pay until the legality of the cameras is clarified. While many residents support the goal of creating safer streets, there is controversy surrounding the means by which it has been achieved.

  1. What’s the controversy not being man enough to pay a ticket when you didn’t stop!

Reckless Driving in this neighborhood in recent years has become a huge risk. I challenge anyone who disputes this hang out on the corner of summit and Washington near cedarhurst Park. People just do not stop and nearly run over kids all day long.

  2. When is Bruce going to keep his word and lower red light cameras? Bruce told me he would do it to my face but he has lied! Shame on him!!

  3. Not stopping at stop signs is dangerous . People are worried about the legality of the cameras ? What about the legality of driving right through a stop sign and the unfortunate result that could come from it ??

  4. We need to tax more the 5 towns for not allowing homes to be cheaper and more developing lands for townhouses.

  5. It’s better then an accident I drive every day to school and NO ONE stops Do you want your husband child or YOU to suffer no one stops Shane on all of you

  6. All cameras are a violation of the 6th amendment. It’s a legal defense used in other states to beat the tickets.

  7. More laws and more taxes that’s what I say. A taxed community is a happy community. I think they should raise all the taxes everywhere on everything, it would be euphoric! Long Island deserves to be bombed out of existence.

  8. No Sidewalks or Crosswalks in Saddle Rock Village Forcé Pedestrians to Walk to Worship in the Roadway.
If Saddle Rock Village cared about Pedestrian Safety they would have Sidewalks and Crosswalks.
They chose to use cameras because they generate money.
    Very sad and shameful.

  9. I’m a crossing guard, crossing 5 year olds and up, including parents that accompany their younger children. It angers me to see how many drivers blow my stop sign daily, mostly bc they’re texting. Get off your phone! With technology today there is no reason to have your phone in your hand. The fine for using your phone is $283.00 Nassau County is not one to reduce the fine.
