Israel At War: What Americans Currently in Israel Need to Know

0

Following the devastating Hamas attacks on Israel on Simchas Torah morning, Israel has launched Operation Iron Swords. It is important to note that this is not a regular ‘operation’ in Gaza; Israel is now at war, and the hostilities may go on for an extended period of time.

Below is some important information for English speakers who are in Israel at this time.

Safety Guidelines:

Follow all instructions from the security forces and the Home Front Command. Details in English on all relevant topics can be found here.

Flights:

Many tourists will be seeking to return home after Sukkos. Conversely, many residents or students who have traveled abroad will wish to return to Israel after the holidays.

Ben Gurion Airport remains open at this time. However, most airlines have suspended flights to and from Israel for at least the next 48 hours. El Al continues to operate most of their flights, but is hampered by the fact that many pilots have been called up for military duty. If you are scheduled to fly, check with your airline.

Hospitals and Doctor Appointments:

In most cities, regularly scheduled doctors appointments or procedures in hospitals remain as scheduled. However, numerous doctors have been called up for military duty. Check with your clinic or hospital before attending an appointment.

Government Offices:

Misrad HaPnim offices in most areas of the country were closed today (Sunday). Details will be released later regarding subsequent days. Some local municipalities such as Jerusalem remain open today; others are shuttered. Check with each office before visiting.

Transportation:

Intercity bus transportation is severely curtailed, as buses are being used to ferry military personnel. If possible avoid travel. Alternatively, Israel Railways is a good option, and has stepped up service on many lines.
