NY Politicians Stand by Harassed Jewish Teacher

Sunday morning, Councilwoman Inna Vernikov of the 48th district in Brooklyn held a press conference outside Origins High School. The conference was held in response to a recent article published in the NY Post, which reported on “Antisemitic teens terrorizing Jewish teachers with Hitler jabs, death threats as NYC school refuses to discipline them: ‘I live in fear’”. The councilwoman was joined by former assemblyman and Jewish advocate for Antisemitism, Dov Hikind, as well as the affected teacher and other supporters.

The purpose of this press conference was to shed light on the growing issue of systemic antisemitism in our public schools throughout the NYCPS. Councilwoman Vernikov passionately expressed her concerns, stating, “This has become a culture, this behavior is tolerated and accepted, and the DOE is ok with it.”

Dov Hikind, in his introduction of Councilwoman Vernikov, referred to her as a “hero” and called on the 30 members present at the rally to stand up against antisemitism.

Moshe Spern, an advocate in attendance, also showed his support, saying, “Inna Vernikov has been a hero and true voice for the voiceless. She’s not afraid to stand up for what’s right.”

This is the second time since October 7th that the NY Post has featured a front-page story about a teacher in a NYC public school living in fear for their life. Unfortunately, incidents like these are not isolated occurrences. There have been numerous reported issues, some of which are handled appropriately, while others are not.

The community is fortunate to have individuals like Inna Vernikov and Dov Hikind who are willing to speak up and fight back against antisemitism. The NYCPS Alliance, founded by Tova Plaut, and End Jewish Hate were also present at the rally. These groups are organizing another rally on Wednesday, March 6th, outside the Brooklyn Museum, called “What about Brooklyn?”. Dov Hikind mentioned that he will be in attendance as well.

  1. Where is the UFT? Why are they not supporting their teachers? As a retired teacher, I’m shocked that Jewish staff are being abused. It’s no wonder there’s such a shortage of teachers when they feel threatened by the tolerated ,disgusting abuse. It’s time to take a stand and demand that there be obvious consequences to anyone who doesn’t respect our members.

  2. Where is the mayor, who usually stands up against antisemitism. Is it ok in the school system? My daughter works in the system. Her principal won’t stand for this. Why has the principal of origins not been fired? She’s a disgrace to the system.

  3. I am extremely grateful that Dov Hikind is speaking up on this terrible issue, but where is Debra Lipstadt? Why is our Federal Government’s special envoy on antisemitism silent and invisible when faced with the incredible but disgusting rise in antisemitism all over the United States?

  4. So frum Jews. That’s the politicians who supported the teacher. That speaks volumes about the rest of the NY politicians.

  5. I’m a retired teacher and graduate of Brooklyn College. Where’s the UFT and NYSUT. Many of us all still paying dues, why aren’t these unions protecting our Jewish staff. And where’s Senator Schumer—-he’s been so very quiet on issues of antisemitism. Yasher Koach to Dov Hikind—he’s the voice that MUST be heard!!!

  6. Where’s the UFT AND the NYSUT—many of us are still dues paying members. And where’s Senator Schumer????-he’s been quiet on many issues of antisemitism. Yasher Koach to Fov Hikind—-he’s the voice that MUST be heard.
