Crowds numbering in the tens of thousands filled the streets of Israel for a second consecutive night on Sunday, demanding immediate elections and urging the government to swiftly negotiate the release of over 100 hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza.

These dual demands signify a convergence of two separate protest movements. One involves the families of the hostages, while civil society groups and the political opposition lead the other.

On Sunday, demonstrators moved from “Hostage Square” plaza in Tel Aviv to the parliament in Jerusalem, brandishing Israeli flags and chanting for the ousting of the country’s longest-serving leader. Netanyahu, responding to the protests, delivered a televised address from inside the parliament building.
