FDA Launches Recall on Apple Sauce Pouches After Finding Lead

0

The FDA has issued a health advisory and product recall in response to the discovery of lead and chromium contamination in various cinnamon apple puree and applesauce products.

People who consumed the products, especially those with elevated blood lead levels, may have been exposed to chromium. Healthcare providers should monitor affected individuals and provide supportive care.

Chromium is a naturally occurring element, and the form detected in the samples is not definitively determined. The investigation is ongoing, and FDA will update the advisory as more information becomes available.

Consumers are urged to check the recall announcement for specific lot codes and UPC information.

Recalled Products:

WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches (including three packs)
Schnucks-brand cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches and variety pack
Weis-brand cinnamon applesauce pouches

Symptoms of Lead Toxicity:

Lead is toxic to humans and can affect people of any age. Children, in particular, are more susceptible to lead toxicity. Short-term exposure can result in symptoms such as headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, and anemia. Longer-term exposure may lead to irritability, lethargy, muscle aches, and other health issues.

Stores Affected:

WanaBana products sold nationally through various retailers, including Amazon, Dollar Tree, and Family Dollar/Dollar Tree combination stores.
Schnucks-brand products sold at Schnucks and Eatwell Markets grocery stores.
Weis-brand products sold at Weis grocery stores.

Recommendations:

Consumers should not eat, sell, or serve the recalled products and should discard them.
Check homes for these products, and if found, discard them properly.
If symptoms of lead toxicity are suspected, contact a healthcare provider.
Healthcare providers are advised to refer to CDC’s guidance for caring for patients potentially exposed to lead or chromium.

Complaint/Adverse Event Reports:

As of December 20, 2023, FDA received a total of 82 reports related to the contamination, spanning multiple states.
