Dozens of residents reached out after feeling the entire floor shake from what felt like an earthquake.

We can now confirm that a rare 4.8 Magnitude earthquake did in fact hit the Tri-State area.

The quake hit 18 miles north of Plainfield, NJ (magnitude via USGS). This data is unofficial and will be updated as we gather more information.

No tsunami risk is anticipated.

The 4.8 quake is the biggest earthquake with an epicenter in New Jersey since 1783, and the 3rd biggest on record.

Governor Hochul: “A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit west of Manhattan and has been felt throughout New York.

My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day.”
