On Friday night, a colossal container ship experienced a power failure in the waters surrounding New York City, coming to a halt near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge – a situation reminiscent of a recent incident where another massive cargo vessel collided with Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The US Coast Guard confirmed that the 89,000-ton M/V Qingdao lost propulsion around 8:30 p.m. while navigating the Kill Van Kull waterway, which serves as a vital shipping lane between Staten Island and Bayonne, New Jersey.
A photo shared by John Konrad, CEO of the maritime-focused news outlet Captain X, depicted the 1,100-foot Qingdao floating perilously close to the bridge connecting Brooklyn and Staten Island.
In response to the power outage, three tug boats were swiftly dispatched to assist in bringing the Qingdao under control.
